FEBRUARY 2018
Thank you…for keeping your fingers crossed for me with regards last month's audition! I’m delighted to share the news that I have been cast as the lead in Nocturnal.
Nocturnal is a short horror film focusing on the protagonist, Cara. After a traumatic break-in to her apartment resulting in all her sentimental family photos being stolen, Cara becomes obsessed with cleaning and being clean to wash away the presence of the intruder.
As well as developing this compulsive self-destructive behaviour, she also begins to sleepwalk. Waking after sleepwalking, Cara finds the results of what she has done in the night, often turning on the TV and switching on taps. However, some of the things she sees and hears while she is awake she cannot explain and she can’t discern if it is her traumatised mind inventing things or if something more sinister is happening.
What Cara doesn’t realise is that she is being watched by an intruder who never left.
Esther S Conroy, writer and director of Nocturnal, has this to say…
“I think the most disturbing films are the ones which play on base fears. Things like being watched, being isolated, going insane and films which turn the ordinary into something horrific. I want to make a film that is disturbing and will stay with an audience after they leave the theatre.”
Nocturnal has just launched it’s Indiegogo campaign on this link https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/nocturnal-short-film-horror/x/11623131#/ and there are lots of fantastic film perks on offer, so make sure you don't miss out!
Showreel Share Day…was another fantastic success, thanks to the hard work and talents of Kate Davies https://twitter.com/KateDaviesSpeak Despite most of my latest work still being in lockdown, I was able to put together a ‘refreshed’ reel by grabbing a scene from just about every film I have ever worked on between August 2014 and November 2016. With only 2 minutes and 19 seconds available it was a challenge to fit all of my favourite scenes in, a challenge that is only going to get harder as soon as my other work becomes available! In the meantime, you can watch my current showreel on this link https://youtu.be/w_MyL1cbejg
Opportunities like Showreel Share Day don’t come along every day…and it has made me realise that as well as getting out there and finding work, it is every bit as important to ensure you reinvest to reap the value from your work. Spending quality time updating your showreel is essential to ensure your best work is available and out there for all to see.
As they say, you are only ever one showreel view away from securing your next big role. Just make sure you have obtained your footage in the correct format to cut it in into a reel, along with the permission of the filmmaker to use the footage in your showreel.
I use iMovie which is not a perfect platform, but as Adobe is quite pricey iMovie is an affordable alternative. If you don’t feel confident about using this technology, there are lots of companies that can offer this service. Your showreel is your calling card, so it’s a worthwhile investment. Also, make sure you keep your showreel as a “pinned tweet” on your Twitter account. That way, whenever anyone checks you out on Twitter, your showreel is going to be the first thing they see on your feed.
Well done to Ross Kelly...on completing his short film, Sheltered, which means it is only a matter of time before the trailer is released and you get to see what happens when an old friend returns to the neighbourhood and a young woman must confront her sheltered youth with the enigmatic boy, and the troubled truth of a stolen life.
Dead Zone...is now headed off to film festivals across the globe and I have no doubt it is going to be well-received. Nocturnal Pictures will be releasing the trailer in the next few months, so be prepared to be afraid, very afraid! KILL.RUN.SURVIVE.
And in more good news about Nocturnal Pictures, huge congratulations to...Leroy Kincaide and Chloe Chudasama on the continued success of Max Payne:Retribution. This month, this fantastic fan film won Best Cinematography at Fan Film Awards 2018 in Los Angeles, CA.
You can watch the entire film for free here https://youtu.be/0J5vrTMXXoo
Last but not least…huge thanks to all the filmmakers who have taken a chance on me. As Sam Rockwell said when he won the Bafta for best supporting actor for his role as Dixon in the smash film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri,
“There are no great actors, just great roles.”
